Tayside Aviation Secure New RAF Flying Scholarship Contract
Tayside Aviation hassecured the latest MoD contract providing the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme (ACPS) contract for the next five years. This contract provides training for 150 cadets per year and is worth around £1.5 million.
Jim Watt, Managing Director for Tayside Aviation said, “We are pleased to be able to continue to serve the RAF in delivering the flying scholarships. We have held this contract continuously now for the past 23 years and it requires high standards of flying and safety as well as delivering a cost effective program for the RAF. Our instructors have to be high achievers as they all have to be cleared to fly with the RAF Central Flying School. It is a tough and demanding contract to deliver but our vast experience has enabled us to keep at the leading edge of service delivery. Here in Dundee in Scotland we have the most favourable weather and fly this program all year round. It is great for Scotland and for Dundee. I am very proud of my staff and Flying instructors who do an outstanding job. We train over 200 pilots a year at Dundee to the very highest standards recognised by the Royal Air Force.
Tayside Aviation has now been operating for over 45 years and is the only Flight School in the UK approved to fly the RAF Flying Scholarships with cadets coming from all over the UK to train in Dundee. They also train scholarships for The Air League, The Honorary Company of Air Pilots as well as GAPAN Hong Kong. Tayside Aviation also has a pilot placement program with Loganair.

Saab Training room open!
The Saab training room will allow us to train pilots for their Saab 340 type rating. It's a full mockup of the cockpit which allows pilots to familiarise themselves with the procedures and checklist tasks. Combined with the simulator room this allows us to prepare students for type rating training with Loganair, who operate several flights a day out of Dundee in this very aircraft.
We have recently invested in a full interior refit of the Seneca. Experience the new luxury surroundings by renting this impressive aircraft at the weekends. And now is as good a time as any to upgrade your licence to fly twin engined aircraft, contact us to find out more

Tayside Aviation Celebrate a Centenary of Female Flight.
In 1911, Hilda Hewlett became the first female pilot to be issued with a British pilots licence. We commemorated this 100th anniversary in association with British Womens Pilot Association in a nationwide Women in the Air day to encourage more females to take to the skies. Staff, students and scholarship cadets were able to enjoy the spectacular event with flights, grand buffet and of course a lovely slice of birthday cake. Pink balloons were in evidence in the marquee specially set up for the event.
The event was featured on STVs Daybreak programme, on Radio Tay and also in the Dundee Courier and Daily Record.

Paul Wilkinson also flew solo the same afternoon.
Many will be sad to see Andrea leave but pleased that she has joined Loganair as a first officer as part of Tayside Aviations partnership with Loganair
Tayside Aviation and Loganair Partnership
An Airline Placement Partnership has been launched in Scotland between two major players in the aviation industry – Tayside Aviation and Loganair.
Loganair have routinely used Tayside Aviations’ facilities and flight simulator to carry out their pilot selection process for jobs with Loganair and for their holding pool. Both companies have now formalised and developed this partnership.
Dave Rubery, Fleet Manager for Loganair states “ Tayside Aviations’ professional training standards continue to produce the calibre of pilot needed for the Loganair environment. The facilities at Tayside are first class, including their Alsim AL200 MCC simulator. We are delighted to formalise this partnership and look forward to working with Tayside to help identify and nurture our future Loganair pilots.”
Pilots working with Tayside Aviation will, if successful at these selections, go to Sweden to be type-rated on the SAAB 340 on secondment to Loganair. Pilots would then return to Tayside Aviation to continue working as an Instructor until jobs come along. The main advantage is that four pilots at a time are type rated on the SAAB but it means that Loganair can employ the First Officers as and when a job pops up singly rather than four at a time. Essentially Tayside offers a “Working Pool” which keeps the candidates actively flying and Loganair will offer jump seat flights to help with currency.
Jim Watt, Managing Director of Tayside Aviation said “We train pilots to fly in UK for UK conditions and we culture students and our Instructors towards flying in these demanding conditions. We already have an excellent working relationship with Loganair and we look forward to developing this further with this exciting new initiative. We are also delighted that we are helping to place our students and instructors on the first step towards their career as an airline pilot”.
